Converting from a tank water heater to a tankless isn't a swap — it's a system upgrade. The gas line feeding a 50-gallon tank delivers 40,000 BTU/hr; a whole-home tankless needs 180,000–199,000. Vent runs change from B-vent to concentric PVC or stainless. Recirculation pumps need planning if the homeowner expects instant hot water at the furthest fixture. We size the unit to the actual demand, upsize the gas supply, run proper venting, pull the permit, and commission the system to spec.
What's Involved
Demand Sizing
Real calculation: number of simultaneous fixtures, coldest incoming water temp (52°F in LA winter), desired output temp. We don't undersize to save money and we don't upsell to oversize.
Gas Line Upsize
Most LA homes need gas line upsizing for a whole-home tankless. We run new ¾" or 1" black pipe from the meter, permit it, pressure test, and have it inspected.
Venting Install
Concentric PVC or stainless vent to the exterior. Direct-vent where possible to keep combustion air separate from the attic/mechanical room.
Recirculation Pump (Optional)
If instant hot water matters, a dedicated recirc line or demand-pump setup delivers hot water to the furthest fixture in under 15 seconds. Can be added now or later.
Full Permit Package
