Why Your Drains Keep Clogging in a Los Angeles Home

Why Your Drains Keep Clogging in a Los Angeles Home

Here's a pattern we see every week: a homeowner calls because the kitchen drain clogged, a plumber runs a cable snake, water drains again, invoice $175. Six weeks later, same drain, same clog. Cable snake again. Six weeks later, rinse repeat.

The snake isn't fixing anything. It's punching a hole through a clog that immediately re-forms. And if it's happening repeatedly in your LA home, there's almost always a deeper issue that cable snaking will never address.

The Real Causes of Recurring LA Drain Clogs

Kitchen: Grease Buildup

Most LA homeowners run some hot water after pouring grease down the drain. The grease flows out of sight, cools in the trap or a few feet downstream, and hardens against the pipe wall. Over months, it narrows the drain passage from the inside. A cable snake bores through the middle of the grease and creates temporary flow — but the grease is still there, and the clog re-forms.

Bathroom: Soap + Hair Scale

LA's hard water makes soap scale. Combine it with hair in a shower or bathroom sink drain and you get a cement-like buildup on the pipe wall. Cable snaking bores a pathway; within weeks, more hair and scale fill it in.

Sewer Main: Tree Roots

The biggest recurring-clog offender in LA is root intrusion in the sewer lateral. Our climate grows enormous trees with aggressive root systems — sycamores, ficus, pepper, Chinese elm — and those roots are programmed to find water. Clay or cast-iron sewer laterals leak microscopic moisture at every joint; roots grow toward the moisture and then into the pipe. After years of infiltration, a root mass can occupy 80% of the sewer lateral's cross-section.

Why Cable Snaking Isn't the Answer

A cable snake is a flexible metal cable with a cutting head at the tip. It's rotated through the pipe to break up a clog. For a one-time event — a toy flushed, a wad of paper — it's perfect. For a recurring condition — grease, scale, roots — it's a band-aid.

Think of it this way: if your artery has 80% plaque, a cardiologist doesn't solve it by pushing a knitting needle through the middle. The clog comes back. What works is removing the plaque or replacing the pipe.

What Actually Works

Hydro Jetting

A hydro-jetting unit sends 4,000 PSI water through a specialized nozzle that scours the pipe wall from the inside. It removes grease, scale, and roots — not just punches through them. Done correctly, it restores the full original diameter of the pipe. For a kitchen line that clogs every six weeks, one jetting visit typically extends the next clog out to 12+ months.

Camera Inspection First

Before jetting, we run a camera inspection. For recurring main-line issues it often reveals the real cause: a broken section, a belly in the line, root intrusion through a joint. Jetting won't fix a structural defect — but pipe lining or spot repair will, and the camera tells us which.

Root Treatment

After jetting roots out of a sewer lateral, a foaming root-control treatment delays re-growth by 12–18 months. Repeat annually on lines that are known root-intrusion problems.

Lining or Replacement for Structural Issues

If the camera reveals cracks, offsets, or an eroded pipe bottom, no amount of clearing will solve the problem permanently. At that point, the economic answer is often trenchless lining — a new epoxy pipe formed inside the old one, with no yard excavation.

What You Can Do to Prevent Clogs

  • Never pour grease down the drain. Not even with hot water chaser. Save it in a can and throw it out.
  • Use a mesh hair catcher in every shower. $3 at any drugstore. Prevents 80% of bathroom drain issues.
  • Flush hot water weekly. Once a week, run the kitchen sink hot for 3 minutes. Helps carry residual grease through.
  • Avoid chemical drain cleaners. They damage older pipes (especially common in LA homes) and rarely reach the actual clog. We won't work above a pipe that's been freshly dosed.
  • Don't plant aggressive trees over your sewer lateral. If you already have one, get a camera inspection every 3 years and plan for trenchless when the lining starts to fail.
