Sewer line failures rarely arrive as surprises — they announce themselves weeks or months in advance if you know what to look for. And the economics favor action: a sewer issue caught at the warning stage might cost $2,500 to fix. The same issue caught after catastrophic failure costs $15,000–$30,000, plus possibly a few nights in a hotel. Here are the six warning signs every LA homeowner should know.
Sign 1: Multiple Fixtures Backing Up at the Same Time
A single slow drain is usually a branch-line issue — hair in the shower trap, grease in the kitchen. But when multiple fixtures back up together — toilet + tub + shower + washer all draining slowly or gurgling — the clog is in the main line, not the branches. Multiple-fixture backup means the lateral (the pipe from your house to the city main) is compromised.
Severity: High. Call a plumber this week. If sewage is coming up into the lowest fixture (usually a tub or floor drain), call today.
Sign 2: Gurgling Sounds in Drains When Using Other Fixtures
Flush the toilet and the shower drain gurgles. Run the washer and you hear the kitchen sink burping. That's air being displaced through water traps because the main line has a partial blockage forcing air to find another escape route.
Severity: Medium-high. Schedule a camera inspection within 2–4 weeks. It's telling you something is partially blocking flow — catch it before it fully blocks.
Sign 3: Sewage Smell in the Yard
A waft of sewage odor in your backyard — especially over the path where your lateral runs toward the street — indicates the pipe is leaking. Either the line has cracked enough to weep sewage into the soil, or roots have penetrated joints and disturbed the seal.
Severity: High. LA County Health Code treats uncontrolled sewage as a nuisance that can get you cited. Plus, once sewage is leaking into soil, the pipe structure is compromised — it's only getting worse.
Sign 4: Unusually Lush Patches of Lawn or Garden
A 3-foot oval of dramatically greener grass in an otherwise uniform lawn, directly over where your sewer lateral runs — that's fertilizer at work. Your sewer is leaking nutrients into the soil, and the grass above is thriving on it. Beautiful until you realize what's happening.
Severity: High. Paired with the sewage smell above, this is conclusive. Schedule inspection this month.
Sign 5: Recurring Clogs After Snaking
If the same drain has been cable-snaked three times in a year, the snake isn't fixing the actual problem. The cause is almost certainly structural — a crack, a belly (sag), offset joints, or root intrusion. Snaking makes temporary flow; the clog re-forms because the underlying defect is still there.
Severity: Medium. Not an emergency but needs a camera inspection and a decision: jet + root treatment, spot repair, trenchless lining, or full replacement. The longer you wait, the more each option costs.
Sign 6: Cracks in the Foundation or Sinking Ground Near the Sewer Line Path
A sustained sewer leak washes out the soil around the pipe. Over time, that can create voids that let your foundation settle unevenly. Signs: new hairline cracks in stucco, doors that suddenly don't close right, a low spot in the lawn over the lateral path.
Severity: Highest. Foundation damage is orders of magnitude more expensive than sewer repair. If you see ground settlement over the lateral path, get a sewer inspection immediately.
What the Inspection Will Find
An LA sewer inspection ($275–$350) sends an HD camera from the cleanout to the city main. Common findings:
- Root intrusion at one or more joints. Common in clay and cast iron. Fix: hydro jet + annual root treatment, or trenchless lining.
- A belly (sag) in the pipe. The line has sunk, creating a low spot where solids accumulate. Fix: spot excavation and re-set, or full replacement if the belly is severe.
- Crack or break. Fix: spot repair (if isolated) or lining (if multiple cracks).
- Offset joint. Adjacent pipe sections have shifted out of alignment. Fix: lining if slight, replacement if severe.
- Orangeburg pipe. Pressed tar-paper pipe common in the 1940s–50s. Once it starts to collapse, it cannot be lined. Full replacement required.
- Lead or clay all the way to the city main. Common in Pasadena, Glendale, old LA. Usually still functional but has a clear end-of-life.
